SySTEM2020 – Connecting Science Learning Outside the Classroom

From 2018 to 2021 we had the opportunity to participate in the European research project SySTEM2020 – Science Learning outside School (EU-Horizon 2020, Science with and for Society SwfS). An international consortium with 16 partners lead by Trinity College Dublin used qualitative and quantitative research to investigate how extracurricular STEAM learning takes place.

  • What are the factors that promote and hinder science learning outside school among diverse participants?
  • What are potential strategies towards more inclusion?
  • What role do learning ecologies play?

A map of thousands of STEAM organizations in Europe was compiled. The results of the research were transformed into a set of very useful, down-to-earth best-practice tools to be implemented at the partners’ sites and by anyone interested. They continue to shape our work to this day.
